Aloo Tikki (Potato Patty)

We usually go out on Fridays for dinner. Last Friday, my husband decided to cook for a change :P. To add more to the surprise, he decided to make Aloo Tikki (potato patty) ... yum yum. Aloo Tikki is an elaborate preparation but totally worth it.

It is one of the most popular North Indian street food, relished by everyone, tastes best when served hot!!

All you need:
(Servings: 6)

2 large potatoes
2 tbsp semolina(Rawa/sooji)
Salt to taste
Oil for cooking

For Stuffing:
2 tbsp crumbled cottage cheese (paneer)
1 tbsp boiled green peas
1/4 tsp red chili powder
1/4 tsp coriander powder
1/4 tsp garam masala
Salt to taste

For Garnish:
Finely cut Julianne's of carrot, onion, green cabbage and beet root. Few tomato slices.
Red chutney(meethi/sweet)
Green coriander chutney (khatti/ sour)

How to prepare:
  • Boil and mash the potatoes, add salt and keep it aside.
  • Prepare the stuffing for aloo tikki by mixing crumbled cottage cheese, green peas, spices and salt. Stuffing mix is ready.

  • Divide the mashed potatoes in 6 equal portions.
  • Grease your hands to make round balls for each portion of mashed potatoes. Flatten the ball & create trough in the center to fill with stuffing.
  • Add 1 tsp stuffing mix and close the potato ball. Slowly squeeze the stuffed ball between both the hands to flatten it in 1/2 inch thick patty.

  • Coat the uncooked potato patty with semolina.
  • For shallow frying, heat  2 tbsp oil in a flat pan and add semolina coated patties and let them cook on low heat till patties are golden brown on all sides.

  • For serving, make bed of cabbage julienne's with carrot, beet roots. Put the patties & garnish with onions, red(meethi/sweet) and green( khatti/ sour) chutney's. Serve hot!!

You can serve this as a snacks or make it a meal by sandwiching the patties in bread slices.
** For Vegan option instead of cottage cheese/paneer use 2 moist slices of bread.
